Located approximately 23 kilometres southeast of Entebbe on Lake Victoria, the sanctuary offers visitors an unforgettable opportunity to see rescued and orphaned chimpanzees living in a protected forest environment.

Unlike traditional chimpanzee trekking destinations such as Kibale Forest National Park, Ngamba Island offers a different kind of primate experience. Here, visitors come to understand the stories of rescued chimpanzees, observe their behaviour, learn about conservation, and support the long-term welfare of animals that cannot safely return to the wild.

For travellers arriving through Entebbe International Airport, Ngamba Island is also one of the easiest wildlife experiences to add to a Uganda itinerary.

Whether you are planning a day trip from Entebbe, a Uganda safari, a family holiday, a conservation-focused journey, or an overnight stay on Lake Victoria, Ngamba Island is an experience worth considering.

At Rokah Safaris, we can arrange your Ngamba Island visit as part of a tailor-made Uganda safari or as a standalone excursion from Entebbe or Kampala.

What Is Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary?

Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary is a conservation facility dedicated to providing a safe and protected home for rescued and orphaned chimpanzees.

The sanctuary is managed by the Chimpanzee Sanctuary & Wildlife Conservation Trust, commonly known as Chimpanzee Trust, which was established in 1998 to promote the understanding, appreciation and conservation of chimpanzees and their habitats.

The sanctuary is located on an island in Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest lake by surface area, and is accessible only by boat.

Today, the sanctuary cares for 53 rescued chimpanzees living in approximately 95 acres of natural rainforest habitat. The chimpanzees receive veterinary care, supplementary food, behavioural support, rehabilitation and social care.

Ngamba Island is therefore much more than a tourist attraction. Every visitor contributes to a conservation system that provides food, medical care, habitat protection and lifelong support for rescued chimpanzees.

Where Is Ngamba Island?

Ngamba Island is located on Lake Victoria, approximately 23 kilometres southeast of Entebbe, Uganda.

The sanctuary has no road connection or airport. Visitors reach the island by boat from Entebbe.

The boat journey is an important part of the experience. As you leave the shores of Entebbe, you cross the beautiful waters of Lake Victoria and gradually leave the mainland behind.

According to the current Chimpanzee Trust information, the sanctuary’s standard speedboats depart from Pelican Lodge & Marina in Entebbe, with a journey time of approximately 45–50 minutes. The sanctuary currently states that pre-booking is required.

The Story Behind Ngamba Island

The story of Ngamba Island is fundamentally a story about rescue, rehabilitation and conservation.

Chimpanzees are among our closest living relatives, but they face serious threats across Africa. Habitat loss, illegal wildlife trade, hunting and human-wildlife conflict have contributed to declining wild chimpanzee populations in many areas.

Some chimpanzees arrive at Ngamba after being rescued from illegal wildlife trade or other situations in which they could not survive safely in the wild.

Instead of simply keeping the animals in conventional cages, Ngamba provides a large forest environment where the chimpanzees can move, climb, forage, interact socially and express many of their natural behaviours.

The sanctuary’s welfare programme includes:

Veterinary care

Nutrition and supplementary feeding

Behavioural rehabilitation

Social integration

Enrichment

Forest habitat management

Secure night facilities

Conservation education

The Trust explains that some of the chimpanzees cannot be returned to the wild because of their history, age, behavioural condition or other factors. Ngamba therefore becomes their permanent home.

How Many Chimpanzees Live on Ngamba Island?

One of the latest updates from the Chimpanzee Trust is that 53 rescued chimpanzees currently live on Ngamba Island.

The Trust maintains individual profiles for the chimpanzees, showing their names, birth years and rescue stories. This makes the experience particularly personal because visitors can learn that the chimpanzees are not simply a number—they are individuals with different personalities, social relationships and histories.

Among the sanctuary’s residents are well-known individuals such as Sunday, Katie, Rambo, Connie, Bwambale and Nkuumwa, while others have become familiar to visitors and caregivers over the years.

The sanctuary also recently welcomed a younger chimpanzee named RR, born in 2025, according to the Trust’s current chimpanzee profiles.

Latest Ngamba Island Update: Remembering Asega

One of the significant updates from Ngamba Island in 2026 was the death of Asega, one of the sanctuary’s well-known male chimpanzees.

Chimpanzee Trust announced that Asega died on 24 June 2026, at approximately 28 years of age. He was known for his athleticism and acrobatic behaviour and was considered a high-ranking male within the chimpanzee community.

According to the sanctuary, Asega had been rescued from Arua in northwestern Uganda. His remarkable ability to jump and climb even led the sanctuary to construct additional high-security fencing for him and another chimpanzee, Mawa.

His story is an important reminder that conservation is not only about protecting wildlife as a species. It is also about caring for individual animals throughout their lives.

What Can You Do at Ngamba Island?

A visit to Ngamba Island can be much more than simply watching chimpanzees.

Depending on the experience booked and the amount of time available, visitors can enjoy several activities.

1. data-start="13413" data-end="13462">Why Ngamba Island Is Important for Conservation

Tourism at Ngamba Island contributes directly to the sanctuary’s conservation mission.

The sanctuary provides food, veterinary care, habitat protection, enrichment and other forms of support for rescued chimpanzees.

The Trust currently reports that its chimpanzees require supplementary feeding four times per day because the forest alone cannot provide enough food for the entire community. The organisation says it sources more than 30,000 kilograms of food annually for the chimpanzees.

That gives visitors an important perspective.

The money spent on a responsible visit is not simply paying for entertainment. Tourism helps support the infrastructure and daily care required to maintain a sanctuary for animals that may need protection for the rest of their lives.

Ngamba Island and Scientific Research

Ngamba Island also has significance beyond tourism.

The chimpanzees have contributed to research into chimpanzee behaviour, cognition and social relationships.

In 2025, a landmark study published in Science examined how chimpanzees can revise their beliefs when presented with new evidence. The study included work involving researchers from the Chimpanzee Trust and chimpanzees at Ngamba Island.

This demonstrates another important role played by the sanctuary.

Ngamba is not simply a place where visitors observe animals. It can also contribute to broader scientific understanding of chimpanzee intelligence, behaviour and cognition.

Birds and Other Wildlife on Ngamba Island

Although chimpanzees are the main attraction, Ngamba Island is surrounded by the rich aquatic and forest environment of Lake Victoria.

Visitors may encounter different bird species and other wildlife associated with the island’s ecosystem.

The forest and lake environment provide opportunities for nature observation and photography beyond the chimpanzee experience.

For bird lovers, the journey across Lake Victoria can also provide additional opportunities to observe water-associated birdlife.

If birdwatching is a major priority, let your Rokah Safaris guide know in advance so that your itinerary can be planned accordingly.

Best Time to Visit Ngamba Island

Ngamba Island can be visited throughout the year.

Uganda generally has a tropical climate, although weather conditions can vary depending on the season.

Because Ngamba Island involves a boat journey across Lake Victoria, weather conditions are particularly relevant.

For the best experience:

Check the weather before travelling.

Even during rainy periods, Uganda’s wildlife destinations remain attractive, but travellers should allow some flexibility when planning activities involving boat transfers.

How to Get to Ngamba Island from Entebbe

Getting

So, you’re thinking about hitting the roads of Uganda? Awesome choice! There’s nothing quite like exploring the lush landscapes, wild savannahs, and vibrant cities at your own pace. If you’re new to renting a car and self-driving, buckle up (literally!) as we take you through everything you need to know for a smooth ride through the Pearl of Africa.

Finding the Right Rental Car

First things first: you need a set of wheels! Renting a car in Uganda is pretty straightforward, but it does help to know what you’re getting into. Most major cities, especially Kampala, have a range of rental agencies, from international franchises to local outfits. Booking online in advance can save you some hassle (and usually a few bucks). Check for customer reviews and compare prices, but remember, the cheapest option isn’t always the best. Look for a company that offers reliable cars and good customer service.

Now, what kind of vehicle do you want? If you’re planning to stick to the city or do a bit of highway cruising, a sedan should suffice. But if you’re dreaming of venturing into the Queen Elizabeth National Park or trekking through the misty mountains of Bwindi, you might want to opt for an SUV or a 4×4. These babies can handle Uganda’s challenging terrains and make your adventure all the more exhilarating.

Get to Know the Rules of the Road

Before you hit the road, familiarize yourself with the traffic rules. In Uganda, they drive on the left side, which can feel a bit strange but you’ll adapt quickly. Speed limits are often posted, and they’re enforced, so save yourself from the hassle (and potential bribe) by sticking to the law. Be especially cautious in rural areas – you’ll share the road with everything from bicycles to livestock.

You might also want to keep an eye out for potholes, which can be common, especially outside of urban areas. And don’t forget—wear your seatbelt! The locals take safety seriously, and it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Navigating the Terrain

Before you leave the city, ensure you’ve got a decent map or GPS app ready. Roads can be tricky, especially in more remote areas where signage might be limited. Google Maps works well in Uganda, but sometimes it can lead you on wild goose chases, so be prepared for a bit of improv! If you feel a bit lost, don’t hesitate to ask locals for directions. Ugandans are incredibly friendly and always willing to help—plus, you might get some insider tips on the best spots to explore.

Also, consider downloading offline maps just in case you venture into areas with limited connectivity. Trust us; your future self will thank you when you’re discovering stunning views without a signal.

Embrace the Journey

One of the best parts about a self-driving adventure in Uganda is the journey itself. Take your time; don’t just rush from one destination to another. Stop at roadside markets, sample local dishes, and chat with the vendors. Are you a coffee lover? You’ll find some of the world’s best coffee here, so don’t miss the chance to get a taste or two from local farms!

When in doubt, be spontaneous! Some of the best travel experiences come from unexpected detours. Whether it’s pulling over to explore a village or witnessing a breathtaking sunset over Lake Victoria, embrace the opportunities that pop up along the way.

Safety First!

While Uganda is generally safe for tourists, it’s always smart to stay cautious, especially when it comes to your vehicle. Avoid leaving valuables in sight and always park in well-lit, populated areas. If you’re heading out to more isolated regions, consider securing a local guide; they can provide you with valuable insights and help with navigating some off-the-beaten-path locations.

If you find yourself facing an issue with your rental (a flat tire, perhaps?), most companies offer roadside assistance, so don’t panic. Just give them a call, and they’ll guide you through the process.

Enjoy The Ride

Once you’ve got your car, a grip on the rules, and a thirst for adventure, it’s time to hit the road! Whether you’re traversing the stunning Rwenzori Mountains or driving alongside the breathtaking shores of Lake Bunyonyi, the scenery won’t disappoint. And remember, it’s not just about the destination; it’s about making memories along the way.

So, roll down the windows, crank up the music, and soak in the beauty that Uganda has to offer. With your newfound knowledge in renting a car and self-driving, you’re all set for an unforgettable journey in this incredible country. Happy travels!

Get expert advice on planning your first African safari, including choosing the best destinations, when to go, what to pack, and how to ensure a safe and memorable wildlife experience. An African safari is an experience like no other, offering a glimpse into Africa’s stunning wildlife and natural beauty. For those planning their first safari, the process can be overwhelming, with various destinations, types of safaris, accommodations, and tour operators to choose from. However, with the right planning and preparation, a safari can be a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. In this article, we will provide you with a step-by-step guide on how to plan your first safari, from choosing the right destination to packing for your trip. Whether you’re looking for a luxury safari experience or a budget-friendly adventure, this guide will help you make the most of your safari experience.

Choosing your safari experience: Decide what you want to see and do

When you think of planning an African safari, you have to keep in mind the size of the continent with its 54 countries. To narrow this down, you might have to do some initial research online or ask some people you know about what things can be done on an African safari. Some countries are more popular for history and culture, others for wildlife, others for beaches, and so on.

Consider your interests and preferences when it comes to wildlife, landscapes, and activities. If you’re interested in wildlife, research the different animals you may encounter on your safari and prioritize the ones you’d like to see. You may want to see the famous Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo), or perhaps you’re interested in other animals like giraffes, zebras, or cheetahs. If landscapes are more your thing, consider the type of scenery you want to see, whether it’s grasslands, savannas, forests, or mountains.

Additionally, think about the activities you want to do on your African safari, such as game drives, walking safaris, or hot air balloon flights. By considering all of these factors, you can create a safari itinerary that is tailored to your interests and ensures a fulfilling and unforgettable trip.

Where should I go? Choosing the right destination

Knowing what you want to see narrows down your list for choosing the right destination. There are several countries in Africa where you can go on an African safari, such as Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, and Zambia, among others. Each country offers unique experiences and wildlife, so it’s essential to research and choose the destination that suits your interests and budget.

In East Africa where we work and operate, the most popular attractions are savannah wildlife, birds, and primates, especially gorillas and chimps. This means that if your interest is in pyramids or vast deserts, countries in North Africa should be on your list.

If you’re interested in seeing the Mountain gorillas, Uganda and Rwanda should be your top choices. The Akagera National Park in Rwanda, the Serengeti in Tanzania, and the Masai Mara in Kenya are excellent places to go if you want to see the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros, and buffalo). For those interested in the Great Migration of wildebeest, zebras, and other animals, Serengeti National Park and Masai Mara are the places to be.

Additionally, Tanzania’s coastline along the Indian Ocean offers breathtaking beaches like Zanzibar, Pemba Island, and Mafia Island, where you can unwind and soak up the sun after exploring the Serengeti. In Kenya, the coastal region boasts pristine beaches like Diani Beach, Watamu, and Malindi, providing a perfect tropical escape for beach enthusiasts. So, whether you seek gorillas, the Big Five, or the Great Migration, East Africa ensures you won’t miss out on the allure of the beach.

Decide on Your Budget

Safaris can vary greatly in cost depending on where you go and the type of experience you’re looking for. It’s important to decide on your budget before you start planning your trip as it will help you determine the type of accommodation, activities, and length of your African safari.

Luxury safaris with top-notch accommodations and amenities can be expensive, while budget-friendly options such as camping safaris or self-drive options are more affordable. It’s important to research the costs of different safari options and to factor in additional expenses such as airfare, visas, travel insurance, and tips.

Setting a realistic budget for your safari will help you choose the right destination and safari type that fits within your financial means, while still providing a memorable and enjoyable experience.

Travel Style

The choice of travel style will significantly shape your overall experience and the way you explore the wilderness. Each travel style has its unique advantages and considerations, allowing you to tailor your African safari adventure to your specific interests and preferences. Whether you opt for a private excursion, group safari, or a family trip, understanding the characteristics of each style will help you make an informed decision and set the stage for an unforgettable safari experience. There are several types of safaris, including:

Group/ Scheduled Safari: These safaris are pre-planned itineraries offered by tour operators, where you join a group of fellow travelers. This type of African safari usually consists of a small group of people, led by a professional guide who will take you on game drives and other activities. These safaris typically have fixed departure dates and a set duration, allowing you to book a specific package that suits your preferences. More so they offer a cost-effective option as the expenses are shared among the participants.

Private Safari: If you prefer a more personalized and exclusive experience, then a private safari is the perfect option. You’ll have a dedicated guide and vehicle, and you can customize the itinerary according to your interests and preferences. However, it’s important to note that private safaris often come with a higher price tag compared to scheduled safaris due to the personalized nature of the experience.

Family Safari: A family African safari is an excellent option if you’re traveling with children. Many lodges and camps offer family-friendly accommodations and activities, such as nature walks, arts and crafts, and animal tracking.

When to go

The time of year you visit your destination can also have an impact on your safari experience. Different times of year can affect the weather, wildlife sightings, and even the cost of your trip. Research the best time to visit your chosen destination to ensure that you have the best chance of seeing the animals you want to see.

Another important factor to take into account when planning when to go on an African safari is the choice between scheduled safaris and private safaris. Scheduled safaris typically have fixed departure dates and a set duration, offering less flexibility in terms of customization. On the other hand, private safaris provide a more personalized experience with the freedom to set your departure date.

Where to stay

The next step is to choose the right accommodation for your safari. There are several options available, from luxury lodges and tented camps to budget-friendly campsites. The type of accommodation you choose will depend on your budget, preferences, and the type of safari experience you want.

If you want a luxury African safari experience, then a high-end lodge or tented camp is the perfect option. These accommodations offer spacious rooms or tents with en-suite bathrooms, gourmet meals, and various amenities such as swimming pools and spa services.

On the other hand, if you’re on a budget, then a basic campsite or budget-friendly lodge is a great option. These accommodations offer basic facilities, such as shared bathrooms and communal areas, but they provide an authentic safari experience without breaking the bank.

Book with a Reputable Tour Operator

Booking your safari with a reputable tour operator is essential for a stress-free and enjoyable experience. A tour operator will handle all the logistics, such as transportation, accommodation, and activities, so you can focus on enjoying your African safari.

Before booking with a tour operator, make sure to read reviews and check their credentials. Consider the operator’s experience, expertise, transparency in pricing, cancellation policies, and responsible tourism practices.

Choose an operator that aligns with your preferences and values. You can also communicate with them to determine if they will meet your expectations to ensure a personalized and fulfilling safari experience. You can also look for tour operators who are members of reputable safari associations such as the Association of Uganda Tour Operators (AUTO).

Final Preparations for Your Trip

As your safari adventure draws near, it’s essential to make final preparations to ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip. These final preparations include various aspects of your safari, from packing and vaccinations to money and insurance.

Make sure to pack appropriate clothing for the African safari, such as lightweight and neutral-colored clothing, a hat, sunscreen, and insect repellent. You may also need to take medication for malaria, depending on the destination you choose. Additionally, make sure to bring a camera with extra batteries and memory cards to capture the amazing wildlife and landscape.

It’s also a good idea to research the local customs and etiquette of the country you’ll be visiting, and learn a few basic phrases in the local language. Finally, make sure to have all the necessary travel documents, such as passports, visas, and travel insurance.

Final thoughts

Embarking on your first safari is an incredible adventure that will create memories to last a lifetime. By carefully planning your African safari, choosing the right travel style, and booking with a reputable tour operator, you can ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.

Remember to research your destination, understand the best time to visit, and familiarize yourself with the wildlife you may encounter. Pack appropriate clothing and gear for the climate, and be prepared for surprises along the way.

Keep in mind that responsible tourism and sustainable practices are crucial for the long-term preservation of the environment and the well-being of local communities. Support operators that prioritize conservation efforts and contribute positively to the destinations they operate in.

Most importantly, approach your safari with an open mind, a sense of adventure, and a deep appreciation for the natural world. Take the time to immerse yourself in the beauty of the wilderness, observe wildlife in their natural habitat, and create cherished memories that will last a lifetime.

So, go ahead and start planning your first African safari, knowing that with careful preparation and a spirit of curiosity, you’re embarking on a journey that will ignite your passion for nature and leave you with a profound appreciation for the wonders of the animal kingdom. Enjoy the adventure!

The post Your First African Safari: Essential Tips for an Unforgettable Adventure first appeared on Rokah Safaris & Car Hire Services.

The Great Migration is one of the most spectacular wildlife events on the planet, drawing travelers and wildlife enthusiasts from across the globe. Every year, over two million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles embark on an epic journey through the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem, driven by ancient survival instincts and the search for greener pastures. This natural phenomenon is an intricate cycle of life, survival, and predation, offering an unparalleled safari experience.

For those asking, “What is the Great Migration, and when can I see it?”, the answer depends on understanding its seasonal movements. This awe-inspiring journey is dictated by rainfall patterns, making it a year-round spectacle that unfolds in different regions of Tanzania and Kenya. Booking with Rokah Safaris ensures that travelers witness this phenomenon at the right place and time, with expert guides providing unparalleled insights into the migration’s dynamics.

Understanding the Great Migration: A Year-Round Phenomenon

The Great Migration is not a single event but an ongoing cycle that moves in a clockwise pattern through the Serengeti in Tanzania and the Masai Mara in Kenya. Each phase of the migration presents unique wildlife interactions, breathtaking landscapes, and dramatic survival battles between prey and predators. Here’s a breakdown of the Great Migration’s seasonal movements:

December to March – Calving Season in the Southern Serengeti

The migration begins in the Ndutu region of the Southern Serengeti, where hundreds of thousands of wildebeest give birth within a span of a few weeks.

Predators, including lions, cheetahs, and hyenas, take advantage of this abundance, leading to intense wildlife encounters.

This period is ideal for witnessing new life and the constant battle for survival. Rokah Safaris offers specialized safaris during this time to experience the raw beauty of the calving season.

April to May – The Long Rains and Movement Towards Central Serengeti

As the dry season approaches, the herds begin their gradual movement northward to the Central Serengeti.

The long rains make the landscape lush and vibrant, providing incredible photographic opportunities.

With fewer tourists during this season, it’s a great time for intimate safari experiences with expert guidance from Rokah Safaris.

June to July – The Grumeti River Crossings

The migration reaches the Western Corridor, where herds must cross the crocodile-infested Grumeti River.

These dramatic river crossings are a sight to behold as wildebeest bravely take the plunge, often facing ambush by giant Nile crocodiles.

Rokah Safaris offers exclusive access to the best vantage points to witness this high-stakes spectacle.

August to October – The Famous Mara River Crossings

This is the most famous and dramatic phase of the Great Migration, as the herds reach the Northern Serengeti and the Masai Mara in Kenya.

Thousands of wildebeest make a desperate attempt to cross the Mara River, facing raging currents and lurking predators.

This is one of the best times to experience the migration, and Rokah Safaris ensures front-row seats to this extraordinary event.

November – The Return Journey to the Serengeti

As the rains return to the Serengeti plains, the herds begin their journey back south, completing the cycle.

This transitional period still offers excellent game viewing, with lingering crossings and predator action along the way.

Wildebeest Migration in Masai Mara

When is the Best Time to See the Great Migration?

The best time to witness the Great Migration depends on what aspect of the journey a traveler wishes to experience. While river crossings are the most famous, other stages of the migration provide equally breathtaking moments. Here are the key periods:

December to March: Best for calving season in Ndutu, perfect for witnessing newborn wildlife and predator interactions.

June to July: Ideal for experiencing the Grumeti River crossings and large-scale herd movements.

August to October: The peak of the migration, featuring the thrilling Mara River crossings.

November: A quieter yet rewarding time to see the migration as the herds move back south.

At Rokah Safaris Ltd, we provide Gorilla Tracking Guidelines that ensure a safe, respectful, and sustainable experience for both visitors and endangered mountain gorillas. Before you begin your trek, park rangers will brief you on the essential rules for interacting with these magnificent animals.

You must maintain a safe distance of at least 7 meters from the gorillas to reduce the risk of transmitting diseases. Gorillas share about 98% of their DNA with humans, making them vulnerable to many of the same illnesses. Visitors should avoid direct eye contact, stay calm, and avoid sudden movements or loud noises that may startle the gorillas.

When photographing the gorillas, avoid using flash to prevent disturbing them. You may only spend one hour with the gorillas to minimize human impact on their natural behavior. To support conservation, group sizes are limited, and each group is guided by experienced and knowledgeable guides who ensure a respectful, educational experience in the gorillas’ habitat.

These guidelines not only ensure visitor safety but also play a vital role in the conservation of mountain gorillas, helping to protect and preserve these incredible creatures for future generations.

Before heading out to see the gorillas:

Wash your hands thoroughly before leaving for the gorilla tracking activity.

A maximum of eight visitors are allowed to visit a group of mountain gorillas in a day. This reduces the risk of exposing the gorillas to human-borne diseases and also minimizes behavioral disturbance to the gorillas.

The guides will take you to the place where the gorillas were seen the previous day, and you will follow their trail. Keep an eye out for the gorillas’ nesting sites along the way!

The guides will tell you when to prepare your cameras once you find the Mountain Gorillas.

Always keep your voice low and watch the birds and other animals in the forest.

When you are with the Gorillas:

Keep your voice low at all times. You can ask the guides questions.

Stay close together when you are near the mountain gorillas.

Stay at least 7 meters (21 feet) away from the Mountain Gorillas to protect them from human disease transmission.

Do not eat or drink when you are near the mountain gorillas.

If a mountain gorilla charges, remain calm and follow your guide’s lead. Slowly crouch down, avoid eye contact, and wait for the gorilla to pass. Never run, as this could provoke aggression.

Do not touch the Mountain Gorillas; they are wild animals.

Do not use flash photography. When taking pictures, move slowly and carefully.

The maximum time visitors are allowed to spend with the Mountain Gorillas is one hour. This is to minimize their disturbance. If the Mountain Gorillas become agitated or nervous, the guide will end the visit early.

Keep your voice low until you are 200 meters away from the Mountain Gorillas after the visit.

Please carry out any rubbish you bring into the forest with you.

Health Guidelines

Mountain Gorillas are very susceptible to human diseases and the following are ways to minimize the risk your visit might pose to them;

If you feel ill or have a contagious disease while at the park, please volunteer to stay behind. An alternative visit will be arranged for you, or you will be refunded your money as per gorilla reservation guidelines.

If you need to cough or sneeze while near the Mountain Gorillas, please turn your head away and cover your nose and mouth to minimize the spread of viruses or bacteria.

Always stay at least 7 meters (21 feet) away from the Mountain Gorillas.

Respect the time limit imposed on visitors with the Mountain Gorillas each day. This minimizes the risk of disease transmission and stress to the group.

If you need to use the toilet in the forest, ask the guide to dig a hole and cover it when you are finished.

As part of the COVID guidelines, all trekkers are required to carry two facemasks (preferably surgical masks). You’ll be required to wear one at the briefing point, where your shoes and hands will also be disinfected. While trekking, you’ll not be required to wear a facemask, but you’ll be required to wear a fresh one when you get to the mountain gorillas. You’ll be required to keep a 32 ft (10 m) distance from the mountain gorillas with guidance from the expert trackers.

Rwanda Gorilla Tracking Guidelines

Before encountering the gorillas:

a) Always follow the guide’s instructions as they are well acquainted with the national park and its surroundings.

b) Stay within the designated tourist tracking groups while in the forest to avoid getting lost.

c) Keep noise levels to a minimum as it can disturb the mountain gorillas and other wildlife in the forest.

d) Avoid littering any rubbish in the national park.

e) Do not go gorilla tracking if you are feeling sick.

During an encounter with the mountain gorilla:

a) Always maintain a safe distance of at least 7 meters from the mountain gorillas.

b) Avoid using flash photography while taking photos of the gorillas as it may irritate them.

c) Keep noise levels to a minimum, especially within 200 meters of the gorillas.

d) Avoid eating in the presence of the mountain gorillas.

e) Do not touch the mountain gorillas; if they come towards you, remain where you are and avoid direct eye contact.

f) Do not imitate the mountain gorilla behavior as it might send the wrong message to them.

Tourists are allowed to be in the presence of the mountain gorillas for only one hour to minimize the risk of disease spread from humans to gorillas. This is because about 98% of their DNA is similar to humans. To enjoy the experience fully, tourists are advised to carry enough drinking water, wear long-sleeved shirts and pants, and carry a raincoat or waterproof pants as rainfall in Volcanoes National Park can occur at any time.

Health guidelines:

All tourists must provide a certified negative PCR test for COVID-19 taken within the last three days or a COVID-19 vaccination certificate.

On the day of the gorilla trek should a tourist show any COVID symptoms such as high temperature, cough, or flue, he or she shall not be allowed to proceed with the gorilla trek.

Visitors are required to bring their own facemasks and hand sanitizer.

Visitors are expected to maintain social distancing during all treks and throughout their stay in the park.

Planning a gorilla trekking adventure in Uganda’s magnificent national parks? One of the most crucial aspects of preparation is knowing exactly what to pack and wear. This comprehensive guide will ensure you’re fully equipped for an unforgettable encounter with mountain gorillas in either Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

Essential Clothing for Gorilla Trekking

Your clothing choices can make or break your gorilla trekking experience. Start with lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and long pants to protect you from scratches and insects. opt for earth-toned or neutral colors like khaki, olive, or brown, as bright colors might disturb the gorillas. Quick-drying, moisture-wicking materials are ideal as the forest environment can be humid and wet.

Layer your clothing strategically. The morning can be cool, but temperatures often rise as you trek. A lightweight waterproof jacket is essential, as rain showers are common in Uganda’s forests. Don’t forget to pack at least two sets of trekking clothes, as you might get muddy or wet during your adventure.

Footwear and Hand Protection

Proper footwear is arguably the most critical element of your gorilla trekking gear. Invest in waterproof hiking boots with good ankle support and deep treads. Break them in before your trip to prevent blisters during the trek. The terrain in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park can be challenging, with steep slopes and muddy paths, so reliable boots are non-negotiable.

Pack a pair of garden gloves to protect your hands when grabbing onto vegetation for support. The forest undergrowth can be thick and thorny, and gloves will help prevent cuts and scratches. Some trekkers also find hiking poles helpful for maintaining balance on steep or slippery sections.

Essential Accessories and Equipment

Your gorilla trekking packing list should include several crucial accessories. A small backpack is necessary for carrying water, snacks, and personal items. Pack a rain cover for your bag and camera equipment. Speaking of cameras, bring a good quality camera with extra batteries, but remember that flash photography is prohibited around the gorillas.

Other essential items include:

Insect repellent (preferably containing DEET)

Sunscreen and lip balm

Hat or cap for sun protection

Sunglasses

First-aid kit with basic supplies

Hand sanitizer and wet wipes

Water bottle (at least 2 liters)

Energy snacks

Zip-lock bags to protect electronics from moisture

Practical Tips for Packing

When preparing your gorilla trekking gear, remember that less is often more. You’ll be carrying everything yourself through challenging terrain, so pack efficiently. Consider the weather conditions during your planned visit – Uganda’s climate can vary, but the forests are generally humid with occasional rain.

Keep important documents like your gorilla trekking permit in a waterproof container. It’s also wise to pack a small plastic bag for your used clothes, as they might get quite muddy during the trek.

The success of your gorilla trekking experience in Uganda largely depends on being properly equipped. Whether you’re heading to the misty hills of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or the volcanic slopes of Mgahinga, having the right gear will allow you to focus on what matters most – the incredible experience of encountering mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.

Remember to acquire all necessary items before arriving at the park, as shopping options may be limited in these remote areas. With this comprehensive gorilla trekking packing list, you’ll be well-prepared for one of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife experiences.

The post “What to Pack for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda – The Ultimate Safari Checklist” first appeared on Rokah Safaris & Car Hire Services.

Uganda, affectionately known as the Pearl of Africa, continues to captivate travelers with its diverse landscapes, rich wildlife, and warm hospitality. As we look ahead to 2025, here’s an insider’s guide to the most remarkable experiences this East African gem has to offer.

Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
The crown jewel of Uganda’s tourism, gorilla trekking, offers an unforgettable encounter with mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Local experts recommend visiting Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, home to nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. The experience of watching these gentle giants interact, play, and care for their young is truly transformative. Early booking is essential, as permits are limited and in high demand.

Chimpanzee Tracking in Kibale Forest
While gorillas steal much of the spotlight, Uganda’s chimpanzee experiences are equally spectacular. Kibale Forest National Park hosts the highest concentration of primates in Africa. Local guides share that the best time for tracking is early morning when chimps are most active. The forest also harbors other primates and over 350 bird species, making it a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts.

Hiking the Rwenzori Mountains
Known as the “Mountains of the Moon,” the Rwenzori range offers some of Africa’s most dramatic hiking experiences. Local experts emphasize that these mountains cater to all skill levels, from day hikes to challenging multi-day expeditions. The unique vegetation zones, including giant lobelias and groundsels, create an otherworldly atmosphere that photographers will love.

Murchison Falls National Park Safari
Uganda’s largest national park presents an extraordinary blend of wildlife viewing and natural wonder. The mighty Nile River forces its way through a narrow gorge, creating the spectacular Murchison Falls. Local guides recommend combining a traditional game drive with a boat cruise to spot elephants, hippos, and countless bird species along the river banks.

Cultural Experiences in Traditional Villages
The heart of Uganda lies in its people and their rich cultural heritage. Local experts suggest visiting traditional villages where visitors can participate in community activities, learn about local customs, and enjoy authentic cultural performances. These interactions provide genuine insights into Ugandan life and support local communities.

Whitewater Rafting on the Nile
Jinja, the adventure capital of East Africa, offers world-class whitewater rafting experiences. Local guides emphasize that the rapids cater to both beginners and experienced rafters, with options ranging from gentle float trips to adrenaline-pumping Grade 5 rapids.

Bird Watching in Various Ecosystems
Uganda’s diverse ecosystems support over 1,000 bird species, making it a premier destination for bird watching. Local experts recommend visiting different regions throughout the year to spot various species, from the rare shoebill stork in the marshlands to colorful turacos in the forests.

Queen Elizabeth National Park Safari
This park’s diverse ecosystem supports an incredible variety of wildlife, including the famous tree-climbing lions. Local guides suggest combining game drives with boat cruises along the Kazinga Channel for optimal wildlife viewing opportunities.

Lake Bunyonyi Experience
Known for its scenic beauty and numerous islands, Lake Bunyonyi offers a peaceful retreat. Local experts recommend spending at least two days here, engaging in activities like canoeing, swimming, and visiting local communities on the islands.

Coffee Tours in the Highlands
Uganda’s highland regions produce some of Africa’s finest coffee. Local experts suggest taking a coffee tour to understand the journey from bean to cup, interact with farmers, and taste fresh, locally-grown coffee.

These experiences showcase why Uganda truly deserves its title as the Pearl of Africa. Local tour operators like Rokah Safaris can help customize these activities to match individual preferences and abilities, ensuring every visitor experiences the best of Uganda. Whether you’re seeking adventure, wildlife encounters, cultural experiences, or peaceful retreats, Uganda’s diverse offerings in 2025 promise unforgettable memories.

For the best experience, consider visiting during the dry seasons (December to February and June to August) when trails are less muddy and wildlife viewing is optimal. Remember to book essential activities like gorilla trekking well in advance, as they remain highly sought-after experiences in Uganda’s tourism landscape.
